New: A Shining Example - Albert's story is featured on WQED Pittsburgh. This is a great video for the holiday season.

Albert appeared on the 54th annual Free Care Fund Telethon  and presented his check for over $1,300.00. The program aired on KDKA-TV on Wednesday, December 19th.

Grace LaCarte, 7 years old, of Charleroi, donated $653.50 to Albert. Grace held a garage sale, selling her favorite toys, to raise money for Albert's kids. The Tribune Review article  and the WTAE article reported the event at Children's Hospital, Pittsburgh. Thank you Grace!

Albert appeared at the Mon Valley Home Show.

Albert was interviewed for a Sirius Satellite radio show hosted by Senator Bill Bradley. The show, American Voices, tells the stories of people who do great things for others. American Voices airs nationwide on Sundays. We will post the date when we are notified. Visit the Website for more details.

Albert shined shoes at the Monessen Rite Aid on Saturday, December 9th from 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. There was no charge for the shoe shines, but all tips went to the  Children's Hospital Free Care Fund.

Albert appeared on WQED Pittsburgh, December 12th, at 7:30 p.m.

Albert returned to the annual KDKA TV and Children's Hospital Free Care Fund television show. The show was televised on December 19th on KDKA.

Albert was honored by Allegheny County Council on Tuesday, November 21.

The Caring Institute honored Albert at the 19th National Caring Awards on Tuesday, October 17, 2006. Albert and 12 other caring Americans were honored at the event. The awards were held at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore Maryland. Albert was also inducted into the Frederick Douglass Museum & Hall of Fame for Caring Americans in Washington, D. C.

Albert appeared in the National Examiner Magazine April 10, 2006 issue.

Albert received a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives sponsored by Monessen Rep. R. Ted Harhai and Washington County Rep. Peter J. Daly II. The following letter of thanks was written by Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell:


“It is my distinct pleasure to thank you for the enormously generous donation you gave to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Your generosity has made a positive difference in the lives of countless citizens. You have demonstrated a true love and commitment to your community and its people. Through your generosity you have made an invaluable contribution to the community in which you live that will be remembered for years to come.

On behalf of all Pennsylvanians, I offer my gratitude and admiration for your extreme generosity. You are the epitome of a selfless person and we are lucky to have you as a resident of Pennsylvania. Thank you again.”

 Albert appeared at the "Mon Valley Home and Garden Show" on Friday, March 17, Saturday, March 18, and Sunday, March 19th. Albert shined shoes and donated over 300.00 in tips to Children's Hospital.


 Albert Honored By Children's Hospital
   
Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh hosted a "Thank You Celebration" for Albert on Tuesday, February 28th at the hospital. President and CEO Roger Oxendale, staff and friends of Albert were on hand for the celebration. Local Pittsburgh and Mid-Mon Valley media were also in attendance. Albert was presented with a plaque for his great achievement.

Roger Oxendale began the event and spoke about Albert's hard work and dedication to the patients and families of Children's Hospital. "Even after nearly a quarter of a century, Albert remains motivated by one thing: to help families in a time of need."

Children's Hospital Urologist Dr. Steven G. Docimo, spoke of Albert's selfless nature. "I would argue that Albert is a wealthy man today. They say that you can't take wealth with you, but I think the wealth that Albert has accumulated he can take with him forever."

Albert took the podium and thanked the doctors and his faithful customers. "I appreciate all the doctor's work, and all of my good customers," he said. "I appreciate all of you and I love you all."

What a memorable day it was!

 Albert presented his annual check to the Children's Hospital "Free Care Fund" for $9,448.00. The Holiday event was televised December 20, 2005 on KDKA television.

During 2004, Albert raised $13,735.00 for Children's Hospital. Albert had another successful year!

Albert is now over the $100,000 donation mark. He appeared on the "Jane Pauley Show" on January 31, 2005 on NBC. An anonymous donor from Pittsburgh put Albert over the top during the show. Albert appeared at the end of the show and was surprised by Jane with the large donation. You can also donate to the "Free Care Fund" through Children's Hospital new form.

A Surprise for a Man Whose Done So Much
Albert Lexie has been shining shoes for over 40 years. But twenty years ago, he saw a telethon for Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh that brought new meaning to his work. He began donating his tips to the hospital with the goal of donating $100,000 in his lifetime. Amazingly, he has raised almost $97,000. Today, The Jane Pauley Show and an anonymous donor help Albert reach his goal.
  •  Albert appeared on the CBS Evening News  on Friday, January 14, 2005. The piece was titled "Shining Example" and featured Albert in the uplifting segment. KDKA television rebroadcast the segment on the morning news.  

  • Children's Hospital honored Albert on his birthday with a new wheeled cart. The cart was the idea of Ricki Smith of the Children's radiology department.
